Managing customer expectations for custom portraits
Almost every unhappy custom portrait customer was unhappy before the painting started. The expectation was set wrong at the order.

The most common complaints
- "It doesn't look like them."
- "The colors are different from the photo."
- "It's smaller than I imagined."
- "It took longer than I expected."
Where "it doesn't look like them" comes from
- A blurry or badly lit photo
- An unusual angle that isn't how the family remembers the person or pet
- A style that's looser than the customer expected
- Memory: people often remember a pet younger or brighter than the photo shows
What to tell customers before they order
- It's painted by hand, so it's an interpretation, not a copy of the photo.
- The photo matters most: clear, well lit, eye level.
- Colors on screen and in paint are never identical.
- How long painting and shipping take.
- What can be changed at the proof and photo stages.
When a customer is disappointed
Start by finding out exactly what feels wrong. It's often one thing, an expression or a color, that the painter can adjust at the photo stage before the painting ships. A better photo can also make a real difference.
