What can be reproduced
When a painting's copyright has expired, it can be reproduced and sold without a license. For most classic works, such as those by Monet, Van Gogh, Klimt, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Turner and Cézanne, that is the case. The rules depend on the country and the work, so we check each request rather than assume.
Photographs of famous paintings can carry their own rights, so a reproduction is painted from the work itself, not copied from one particular photograph.
Why paint it rather than print it
A print reproduces an image. A painting reproduces a surface: the direction of the strokes, the thickness where the paint was loaded, the places where the ground shows through. That is what makes a hand-painted reproduction worth hanging.
What can be adapted
- Size. Reproductions are regularly painted to fit a particular wall.
- Crop. A detail of a larger work can make a striking painting on its own.
- Color. Possible, with restraint; change it too much and it stops feeling like the original.
What we won't paint
Work by living artists, or by artists whose work is still in copyright, without a license. We decline it even when a client is willing to take the risk, because in practice the risk lands on the seller: platforms act against the listing, not the studio.

How close to the original will it be?
Close in composition, color and brushwork, but it's a hand-painted interpretation, not a copy. The originals have aged, and photographs of them vary, so we confirm color with you in the proof.
