What is in the public domain
Copyright expires a set number of years after the artist's death — seventy in most of Europe and in the United States for works of that era, though the rule varies by jurisdiction. Artists who died in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries are generally clear. We confirm case by case rather than assuming.
What we will not paint
Living and recent artists remain in copyright. We decline those, including when a client is willing to accept the risk, because in practice the risk lands on the seller: platforms act against the listing, not against the studio.
Painting rather than printing
A print reproduces an image. A painting reproduces a surface — the direction of the strokes, the thickness where the original was loaded, the places the ground shows through. That is why these are worth hand-painting at all.
